What is the purpose of the roller coaster lab?

Purpose: to find out how far a rollercoaster can jump when you drop it from different heights.

How does a marble gain more potential energy?

As the marble rolls down the hill its potential energy is converted to kinetic energy (its height decreases, but its velocity increases). When the marble goes back up the loop its height increases again and its velocity decreases, changing kinetic energy into potential energy.

What do you think happened to the energy lost during the marble roller coaster?

The potential energy at the top of the hill is converted into kinetic energy as the marble travels along the entire roller coaster. According to the law of conservation of energy, the energy of the marble can’t be lost or gained. When the marble is higher, it will have a more potential energy, but less kinetic energy.

How does a marble roller coaster work?

A roller coaster demonstrates kinetic energy and potential energy. A marble at the top of the track has potential energy. When the marble rolls down the track, the potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy. As the car rolls down the hill, the potential energy becomes kinetic energy.

What is the energy called on a roller coaster?

kinetic energy
On a roller coaster, energy changes from potential to kinetic energy and back again many times over the course of a ride. Kinetic energy is energy that an object has as a result of its motion. All moving objects possess kinetic energy, which is determined by the mass and speed of the object.

How is thermal energy used in a roller coaster?

Roller coasters are able to move their passengers very rapidly up and down the hills because the cars have a large amount of potential energy on the very first hill. Thermal energy is energy due to the heat of a system or object. Energy can be converted to heat through frictional dissipation.

When would a marble have the most potential energy?

A marble at the top of the ramp has more gravitational potential energy than one released lower on the ramp, and when that marble is re- leased and begins to roll down the ramp, that potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy.

What happened to the potential energy of the marble as it roll down the ramp and hit the cup?

When the marble hits the cup at the bottom of the ramp, energy is transferred from the marble to the cup causing the cup to move. As a result, when the marble is released and the gravitational potential energy is transformed (primarily) to kinetic energy, the marbles released from higher up can move the cup farther.

How is energy wasted on a roller coaster ride?

The car’s large quantity of potential energy is due to the fact that they are elevated to a large height above the ground. As the cars descend the first drop they lose much of this potential energy in accord with their loss of height. The cars subsequently gain kinetic energy.

Where is the most thermal energy on a roller coaster?

Kinetic energy is greatest at the lowest point of a roller coaster and least at the highest point.
