What is the purpose of the biodiesel lab?
Daniel Foster What is the purpose of the biodiesel lab?
The Biodiesel Lab is an activity developed by Learning Undefeated to help students explore the process of titration and its role in creating biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel is created from vegetable oil through a chemical process called transesterification.
What is biodiesel PDF?
Biodiesel is composed of a mixture of fatty acid alkyl esters. It is a natural substitute for petroleum-derived diesel fuel and has similar or better specifications (density, viscosity, cetane number, flash point, etc.).
What molecule in vegetable oil takes place in the reaction to form biodiesel?
triglyceride
Biodiesel starts out in the form of an organic oil molecule called a triglyceride. These are molecules with three fatty acid chains connected to a glycerol backbone. To make Biodiesel, a catalyst is needed; either Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH).
Can you make biodiesel without methanol?
Of Course Yes, Biodiesel can be produced by the reaction of vegetable oil with any alkyl source such as methanol, ethanol, dimethyl carbonate, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate…. etc. Transesterification of TGs of vegetable oils of low FFAs (alkaline catalyzed).
What is biodiesel PPT?
Biodiesel refers to a non-petroleum-based diesel fuel consisting of short chain alkyl (methyl or ethyl) esters, made by Transesterfication of vegetable oil or animal fat , which can be used (alone, or blended with conventional petro-diesel) in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles.
What are the advantages of using biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a domestically produced, clean-burning, renewable substitute for petroleum diesel. Using biodiesel as a vehicle fuel increases energy security, improves air quality and the environment, and provides safety benefits.
What raw materials are used in biodiesel?
The raw materials for biodiesel production are vegetable oils, animal fats and short chain alcohols.
Why methanol is used in biodiesel production?
Methanol and ethanol are the most often used alcohols in biodiesel production. Methanol is particularly preferred because of its physical and chemical advantages. Beside its reaction with triglycerides is quick and it can be easily dissolved in NaOH [57].
Why does glycerol separate from biodiesel?
Glycerol contains 3 polar OH functional groups which allow it to hydrogen bond with water molecules. Biodiesel, a mixture of methyl esters of long chain fatty acids, is effectively non-polar so it will not dissolve in water, that is, it is not miscible with water.
Can we use ethanol instead of methanol in biodiesel?
First, a biodiesel producer could easily use ethanol in place of methanol, even if the ethanol contains a little water. Ethanol is much less toxic than methanol, and you’ve probably tasted it if you’ve ever consumed gin, vodka, rum or wine. Ethanol is readily available from fermentation of corn, of course.
